Really enjoyed the mini podcast, Gareth! Loved how you politely described the strangeness of Kinds of Kindness, there's no way to put into words that movie 😂 And after hearing you talk about it, I must watch the new Axel F with Eddie Murphy. I recently rewatched the first one as I have a soft spot for a good mix of action and comedy. That's probably why I was surprised to enjoy Deadpool & Wolverine so much (had never watched any of the MCU films or had particular interest in super hero films).
Thanks Cristina. Glad to hear you enjoyed that element. This is why I don't make a good critic, I'm too polite haha.
Yes I'm the same with action/comedy. Axel F hits that sweet spot that made older action/comedies so good but modernises it a touch. In my opinion anyway! Let me know what you think of it. The MCU has a surprising amount of comedy in it. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies are great for that.
Fun read! That 1999 movie book sounds interesting! I remember seeing The Blair Witch Project and The Matrix in the theater. We sat way too close to the screen for Blair Witch, and I had to close my eyes and listen only (due to the hand-held cam's shaky movement). But The Matrix was amazing, and the camera work was revolutionary at the time.
Hope you had a great holiday and nice to have you back! Thanks for the mention - love getting the recs for other newsletters too. And we hadn’t heard of the 1999 film book - hadn’t realised it was a year of so many hit movies!
Your It was a mix of personal anecdotes and fascinating insights into cinema history. I especially enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at Blade Runner's cityscape and your reflections on reading The Biggest Movie Year Ever—another great piece.
On the contrary, having watched that film I immediately knew what you meant 😂

Yes both changed the game in different ways. I saw Blair witch a couple of years later on dvd so was spared the dizziness! The matrix blew my mind!
Thanks so much for the shoutout! And keep up the good work!

Thanks so much :)! Yeah I didn’t realise either but when I thought about it, it made sense. Some absolute classics in 99!
I’ll be paying attention now 😄

Thank you Jon!
Thank for the shout! I need to pick up that 1999 movie book!
No worries! Yeah it’s an interesting read that will fill up your rewatch list for sure.
Thanx for mentioning my Substack, Gareth, it’s very much appreciated :-)
No problem Oene. Your reviews have become a go-to of mine. They’re great!
